What is a FORTIFIED Roof?
What is a FORTIFIED Roof?
A FORTIFIED roof isn’t just about using better shingles; it’s a systems-based approach to construction that goes above and beyond standard building codes. IBHS spent decades researching how wind and rain damage homes, and they created a voluntary set of standards to address those vulnerabilities.
The core principles of a FORTIFIED roof are:
- Sealed Roof Deck: This is the most critical component. Even if you lose a few shingles in high winds, a sealed roof deck prevents water from getting into your attic and home, saving you from extensive interior water damage. This is achieved by using a specialized membrane or tape over the roof sheathing.
- Enhanced Fastening: A FORTIFIED roof uses a specific pattern of ring-shank nails to attach the roof deck to the rafters, making it significantly stronger against wind uplift.
- Locked-Down Edges: The most common point of failure in a storm is the edge of the roof. FORTIFIED standards require stronger drip edges and sealed starter strips to prevent the wind from getting a grip and peeling the roof away.
The Louisiana Fortify Homes Program: Your Opportunity for a Stronger Roof
The state of Louisiana, through the Louisiana Department of Insurance (LDI), has recognized the need for stronger homes. That’s why they created the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program (LFHP), a grant program designed to help you pay for a FORTIFIED Roof upgrade.
How the Grant Works:
The program offers eligible homeowners up to $10,000 in grant funding to help cover the costs of a FORTIFIED Roof replacement. The grants are typically awarded through a lottery-based system during specific application windows.
Eligibility for the Grant:
To qualify for the grant, you must:
- Own and occupy the home as your primary residence.
- Have a homestead exemption on the property.
- Have an in-force wind insurance policy.
- Have an in-force flood insurance policy if your home is in a Special Flood Hazard Area.
- Your home must be in good repair and eligible for the upgrade as determined by a certified FORTIFIED Evaluator.
My Role as Your Certified FORTIFIED Evaluator
This is where I come in. As an IBHS-certified FORTIFIED Evaluator, my role is to serve as the independent third party who assesses your home and ensures the project meets the rigorous FORTIFIED standards.
If you are a grant recipient, the very first step is to hire a FORTIFIED Evaluator to inspect your roof. My evaluation report is a mandatory part of the application process. I will assess your current roof, document any necessary upgrades, and guide you on the next steps to ensure you meet all the requirements for a successful project and receive your grant funds.
The Bottom Line: Protection and Savings
A FORTIFIED roof is more than just a home improvement project; it’s an investment in your family’s safety and financial future. Not only does it provide a critical layer of protection against the next major storm, but it also qualifies you for significant discounts on your wind insurance premiums. The peace of mind alone is priceless.
The Louisiana Fortify Homes Program offers a golden opportunity to make this vital upgrade more affordable. If you’ve won a grant or are considering a FORTIFIED roof, don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here to help you navigate the process and build a stronger, safer home.
